Meet Jimmy, our newest fitness instructor

Lauren Smart

Klyde Warren Park's newest fitness class starts tomorrow, Tuesday April 2. It's a weekly Insanity class, which is part of the Beachbody program (home to Power 90 and P90x). If you're familiar with the program, you just might recognize the KWP instructor Jimmy Hays Nelson. Before he starts kicking park patrons into shape, Lauren Smart spent a few minutes with him to ask a few questions. See you every Tuesday at 5:30 PM!

Lauren: What is an Insanity workout?

Jimmy: Well the official, technical answer is: Insanity is a revolutionary cardio-based total-body conditioning program based on the principles of MAX Interval Training.  Most people are familiar with it from its popularity on TV infomercials.  It has been the #1 In-Home workout for the past 2 years, and I am so excited that we can now offer a live version taught by an Insanity Certified Trainer.

Lauren: So I have definitely worked out with Shaun T's videos. Aren't you the guy he always said "Jimmy's got that good squat" to? How'd you get involved with those?

Jimmy
: *laughs* Yes, it's funny that people that have done the Insanity DVDs all seem to remember Shaun T calling me the guy with the 'good squat'.  I'll try to give you the short version of how I ended up on the videos.  I lost 100 pounds using Beachbody programs like Power 90 and P90X.  As you can imagine, I became very passionate about sharing my story with others that were asking me how I lost the weight.  So I became a Beachbody Coach once I realized that I could make a business out of my passion.  As a coach, I attended events where I met the CEO, Carl Daikeler, as well as the celebrity trainers like Shaun T, Tony Horton, and Chalene Johnson.  It was through those relationships that I was able to land an audition to be an Insanity cast member when I lived, in NYC.  It was an amazing opportunity that I am very honored to have been a part of.

Lauren: A healthy, fitness-focused lifestyle is really important for you – why is that?

Jimmy: As I briefly mentioned above, I grew up a heavy kid.  By my 2nd year of college I was 100 pounds overweight, and had truly given up on any dreams and goals of my own.  I know what its like to feel like you are all alone when trying to get in shape.  It can be so frustrating to feel like you have tried everything and nothing works.  What I found in my own journey is that I was missing the support and accountability component in my efforts.  So I have made it my mission in life to help give hope to those people that are thinking of giving up.  If I can do this, so can they!  The key is not trying to do it alone.

Lauren:
Will people who are new to the Insanity workout be able to keep up in your Tuesday night classes at the park?

Jimmy:  Yes!  We welcome veteran 'Insaniacs' as well as those people that have only seen the infomercial and are curious about doing Insanity.  I offer modifications so any fitness level can come and get a good workout for their own personal level.

Lauren: What will park patrons need to bring to your classes in the park?
Jimmy: What I love most about an Insanity workout is that you don't need any equipment, and because of the modifications we introduce in the class, anyone can do it regardless of their fitness level.   All they need to bring is themselves, comfortable clothes to move in, water, a towel, and an awesome attitude.

Lauren:Anything else you'd like to add?

Jimmy: I'd like to thank all of you working with Klyde Warren Park!   I have been dreaming about launching a class like this since we initially shot the Insanity Workout DVDs four years ago.  I hope everyone is excited the launch of D.I.G. (Dallas Insanity Group).  I'm so excited to help everyone Dig Deeper!
