Woodall Rodgers Deck Park Slowly Taking Shape

by Ashanti Blaize

Slowly but surely, construction crews are making progress on the Woodall Rogers Deck Park in downtown Dallas.

The 5.2-acre deck park connecting downtown to Uptown will be something Dallas has not seen before.

"We like to say, 'short-term pain for long-term gain,'" said Kristin Gray with the Woodall Rogers Park Foundation.

The park's vision can be difficult to conceptualize right now, between the construction equipment, the piles of dirt and concrete and the traffic headaches.

"Since this is the arts district, I figured it might be more of the same -- another building or so," said Grapevine resident Fran Scherich.

On Saturday, crews will take down retaining walls to make way for vital structures.

Gray said beams that will set the foundation for the park and the underlying 1,500-foot highway tunnel will be delivered and installed in September.

"You're getting to see the bone structure materialize in front of our eyes," Gray said.

The park is scheduled to be finished in January of 2012.

In the meantime, the Woodall Rogers Park Foundation has to raise another $15 million to finish the project.
