Progress Report on Dallas Deck Park

by Shelly Slater, WFAA

DALLAS — A new park now under construction on top of Woodall Rodgers Freeway and adjacent to the Dallas Arts District is on time to open in the fall of 2012.

Every day, workers are moving closer to bringing what's simply being called "The Park" to life, and its developers have your safety in mind — not just above ground for the park, but also inside the newly-created tunnel.

Kristin Gray said there will be jet fans on either side of the underground roadway. "They take the air in and out depending on the quality of the air," she said.

Developers will add 32 jet engine fans to the Woodall Rodgers tunnel that extends a quarter of a mile.
"If the carbon monoxide level go too dangerous or there was a fire, those are all safety components we have taken care of," said Gray, who is director of development for The Park. The fans will be monitored by a computer at all times.

Developers say they've studied other major parks and public spaces — like Millennium Park in Chicago — taking the best pieces of each and bringing them to Dallas.

Eighty percent of the large beams are already in place over Woodall Rodgers; this fall, plants will go in.

"This is not just five acres of beautiful green space," Gray said. "This is five acres of incredible programming — everything from Tai Chi and yoga to story time."

There will even be concerts in The Park.

"Dallas has no idea what's in store for them," Gray said. "This is going to change the way people think about Dallas; how they act in Dallas; what they do in Dallas."
