10 Tips for Grand Opening

For our first weekend in Klyde Warren Park, we have a lot of plans. From a ribbon cutting to numerous performances and even a yoga class, there are more than 45 activities scheduled for this weekend. In preparation for this weekend's events, we have a few tips for you from what to wear to the ribbon cutting, bring a blanket to the screening of Midnight in Paris or what you can't bring to The Concert for Dallas.

  1. Take DART or the Trolley. We encourage you to use an alternate method of transportation to get here during grand opening (or any day!). Walking past a surface leve parking lot isn't pretty -- so there isn't one by the park. This means that there is limited parking on the perimeter of the park everyday and on grand opening all the streets surrounding the park will be closed. There are parking lots throughout the Arts District, downtown and Uptown. But we recommend skipping the car totally and taking the DART downtown or the trolley in Uptown.
  2. Leave early. There will be road closures. Check out this list or download our event map.
  3. Travel light. There will be bag checks. Firearms, chairs, food and alcohol are not permitted during grand opening. You can buy food and beverages at the park!
  4. Don't miss A Taste of Cherokee Creek Music Festival on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.  - It seems a lot of people missed the memo about the FREE unticketed concert featuring Bob Schneider and Jimmy LaFave. Don't be one of the people out of the loop. Then you can stick around for our next tip.
  5. Bring a blanket to Midnight in Paris. Unlike The Concert for Dallas, we're not going to bag check you for the movie screening on Sunday. Bring a blanket and a snack and enjoy the first movie screening on the Ginsburg Family Great Lawn. Show up early to hear Owen Wilson himself talk about the film.
  6. On Saturday night, everyone needs a wristband. The Concert for Dallas at 7 p.m. on 10/27 is ticketed. For more details:http://www.klydewarrenpark.org/Visit-the-Park/park-qa.html
  7. Enjoy 50+ Free Activities! Yoga, Tai Chi, Dog Training, Music, Dance, Children's Theater, the list goes on and on. Here’s the full schedule: http://www.klydewarrenpark.org/Grand-Opening/index.html
  8. Explore the Arts District. Saturday and Sunday also mark the last weekend of Art in October, the annual month-long event with activities throughout the district. Check out the Beatles cover band on Saturday, eat in One Arts Plaza or take advantage of the free general admission to the Dallas Museum of Art, the Crow Collection of Asian Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Plus The Dallas Opera's new season opens this weekend. Check out the calendar on their website for more details.
  9. Don't miss the view from The Botanical Garden on the West end of the park. 2012 is a HUGE year for Dallas and there is a lot to be proud of, from the opening of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge to scheduled December opening of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and you can see it all from the park. It's especially beautiful with a big Texas sunset.
  10. Come back! We're thrilled that so many of you will be coming to Klyde Warren Park this weekend and we can't wait to host you, but the park opens for normal operation Monday. This means you can attend FREE zumba classes, ballroom dance lessons, lunchtime piano, bootcamp fitness and that's just day one! Plus there are book and newspaper carts where you can grab some reading and games carts stocked with checkers, chess and many other games. The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation is the non-profit that manages the park and we are committed to keeping the park highly programmed with an unofficial motto: "Clean, Safe, Active." Be sure to explore the website to see all the things Klyde Warren Park offers.

We look forward to celebrating our grand opening with you!
