Chef John Coleman to open restaurant at Klyde Warren Park

Chef John Coleman To Open Restaurant at Klyde Warren Park

Coleman’s Relish food truck to be in park after opening

DALLAS (Oct. 16, 2012)—Chef John Coleman has landed the most coveted Dallas restaurant location for his first solo venture, Savor and Relish at Klyde Warren Park, the 5-acre deck park built over the freeway between Uptown and Downtown Dallas.

Savor, a gastropub concept with an emphasis on fresh food and a shared experience, will be the main restaurant at the park. Relish will be its companion kiosk offering quick fare for dining outdoors. As part of the park’s grand opening, Relish will debut as a food truck until the full restaurant and permanent kiosk open in mid-2013.

“Klyde Warren Park is a special, totally unique location surrounded by green space and the Dallas Arts District,” said Coleman. “Food is social. We will have excellent food that draws people together to enjoy the experience. We are thrilled to be a part of this landmark project.”

Savor will have a chef-driven menu with shared plates such as baked ricotta with house-made flat bread and buttermilk fried calamari with green curry dipping sauce. In addition to a large outdoor patio lounge area, Savor will have a bar with a wall of beer and wine kegs and a custom mixology program. The mid-range price point will bring a formula that has been successful in areas like Knox-Henderson and West Village toward Downtown. Bill Johnson of The Johnson Studios in Atlanta is designing the restaurant’s interior.

Relish, will open as a food truck starting in late October or early November, offering visitors a quick bite to enjoy in the park. Coleman has solved a common burger problem – the toppings seem to fall right out of the bun – by creating burger combinations with the ingredients mixed into the patty and grilled. Guests can get a plain burger or be more adventurous with combinations like corn chow chow, pepper jack and tarragon mayo or bacon, caramelized onions, Swiss and grain mustard sauce. The paired dipping sauce and a no-mess burger will make it easy for park patrons to picnic. Coleman will also offer cookies for a sweet park treat.

Chef Coleman has an impressive 23-year career with Ritz-Carlton, most recently serving as executive chef and director of food and beverage for the Ritz in Uptown Dallas over the last five years. He is one of a few people charged with opening locations for the Ritz worldwide. Coleman is a husband and father to three daughters, a former competitive skier and a rock climber.

“Not only are we introducing a new star chef to the Dallas restaurant scene, we’re opening a restaurant with a star-studded backdrop of the city skyline, the Arts District and five acres of surrounding green space,” said Mark Banta, president of Klyde Warren Park. “John is bringing us three key ingredients – a great sit-down restaurant, a unique patio and bar area, and a quick kiosk with an affordable park meal.”

The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation hired noted architect Thomas Phifer to design the restaurant pavilion and the performance pavilion, two new additions to a neighborhood of significant architecture. The restaurant pavilion, like all of the park amenities, has been constructed through private donations. It is named in honor of Nancy Collins Fisher, wife of Richard Fisher, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation Board member John Muse has partnered with Chef Coleman, providing financial backing for the restaurant.  Since the Park will be privately operated and managed by the Foundation, the restaurant relationship is a key element in the plan to fund park programming and operations.  As part of the agreement, Coleman will also provide special event catering and concessions for events in the park.

In commenting on the new partnership, Foundation Chairman Jody Grant said, “We are thrilled with the relationship between John Muse and John Coleman in that it assures that the interests of the restaurant and the Foundation are perfectly aligned in providing terrific food for park patrons.”
